Touch base with other expats
Your HR department, Maastricht International Play Group, the international school (United World College), International Women’s Club South Limburg, International Churches etc. are great sources of information.
Be informed
Links like www.maastrichtregion.com and www.crossroadsmag.eu are great resources, and also, visit he VVV Tourist Office in your town. They have information on local events and attractions and can point you in the right direction.
First groceries
Albert Heijn is a high-end supermarket. Some stores are open on Sunday or until 10pm on weekdays (check www.ah.nl).
For using the shopping trolley, use a piece of 1 euro or ask for a free coin at the AH Service Desk. Please do not forget to bring along your own grocery bags. At the desk you can also buy the towns specific Maastricht bin liners (vuilniszakken) and basic medicines like aspirin (paracetamol), etc. Albert Heijn’s own brand is well known for it clear allergy info!
Other needs
Look out for shops like Blokker, Hema and Action, which are great shops for household goods and presents.
Stay connected
Hold on to your mobile phone, it might take a while to be connected to a landline. Free Wifi is available at McDonalds, the Municipal Library and in Maastricht at Coffeelovers Annex (plein 1992).
You have Dutch mail!
Do not ignore Dutch utility bills and other Dutch correspondence. They can scare you off but a colleague at work or neighbour will be happy to translate for you so you do not get disconnected!
No Dutch junk mail!
If you do not wish to receive junk mail, ask for a special sticker at your town hall and stick it on letterbox. It will stop all unaddressed mail!
Safe money
Petrol is far cheaper in Belgium, it might be worth a quick border hop to fill up!
